Chapter Seven

Sam couldn’t tell Leo the truth. Not yet. It would serve no purpose making him think she was insane so soon after meeting him.

“My name is Sam,” she said. “It’s short for Samantha. Samantha Hope.”

“I am Leonidis Stefanos. My family protects the innocent from Desmond and his army along the Aegean Sea.”

So Catherine had transported her to Greece, Sam thought, which made sense since two hundred years ago Leo had lived in Greece. Leo’s family from the future spanned the continents and she wondered at what point in Leo’s history did his army grow to North America and the rest of Europe?

“You must believe me I’m not one of Desmond’s followers,” she said.

His eyes narrowed. “You could be a trap.” He took a menacing step toward her, his fists clenched at his sides.

Sam refused to back away. With all the bravery she could muster, she stared up into his dark and dangerous face, his black eyes glittering. “You have to trust me.” Her quivering voice betrayed her show of confidence.

“I trust no one,” he growled. “Take the bag of supplies. I have no more need of you.”

He turned to leave and a thread of alarm ran through her body. “Please, don’t go!” He stopped and turned around, giving her a cold look. “I…I have nowhere to go,” she said in a broken voice.

The words marked the harsh reality of her situation and how impossible her task seemed now. Tears sprang to her eyes and her lips quivered. Sam was lost, helpless. This Leo hated her. Didn’t the lycan legend work in this time, too? Didn’t he feel anything for her? They were supposed to be soul mates.

His gaze flickered over her face and for a brief moment she thought she detected a pang of hesitation and guilt cloud his expression.

“Where is your home?” He asked, his deep tone abrupt.

“I have no home.” Sam tried to formulate her words as truthfully as possible. “I was forced out of my land. I can’t go back there now and…and I’m frightened.

“Lycans have no fear.”

“Well, I do. I turned a few weeks ago and I need help.”

His expression flickered. “How did you turn?”

Sam hated having to lie to him, but it couldn’t be helped. “Desmond’s people raided my village on a full moon and turned everyone. I fled before I was tortured into vowing my allegiance to him.”

He remained silent for so long, staring at her with his dark, penetrating gaze, she wondered what he was thinking about.

Finally, he released a long, drawn out breath. “I have been exploring the lands the past month,” he said, “and was on my way back home before that damn trap felled me.” He reached for the bag of supplies and straightened. “You may come with me. I will take you as far as my village and then we part ways. Do you understand?”

Sam nodded slowly, fear mingling with hope. “How long will it take to reach your home?”

“It is a three day trek if you do not slow us down.
